Saudi Arabia’s King Salman, 88, will receive treatment for a lung inflammation, the royal court confirmed. The king, who experienced high temperature and joint pain, underwent medical tests at Al Salam Palace in Jeddah. He will be treated with antibiotics until the inflammation subsides.
Due to King Salman’s health condition, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) postponed his planned visit to Japan, which was scheduled to begin on Monday. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi announced the postponement, noting the crown prince was set to meet with Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during his visit.
State TV reported that Crown Prince Mohammed reassured the public about King Salman’s health during a cabinet meeting, praying for his speedy recovery and good health.
King Salman, who became the ruler of Saudi Arabia in 2015, is the custodian of Islam’s holiest sites and the leader of the world’s top oil exporter. His illness occurred as Crown Prince Mohammed met with U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to discuss a strategic agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi embassy in Japan did not immediately comment on the postponement of the crown prince’s trip.
