After seven years together, Mariah Carey and Bryan Tanaka have officially called it quits, as confirmed by Tanaka in a statement shared on his Instagram. Tanaka, who started as Carey’s backup dancer and later became her creative director and partner, expressed their “amicable separation” and mutual decision to take different paths.
In the statement, Tanaka shared, “With mixed emotions, I share this personal update regarding my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven extraordinary years together. Our decision to embark on different paths is mutual, and as we navigate these separate journeys, we do so with profound respect and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the invaluable time we’ve shared.”
He continued by expressing his anticipation for the future and the continuation of his passion for inspiration, dance, and the creative arts. Tanaka and Carey first crossed paths in 2006 when he joined her “The Adventures of Mimi” tour as a backup dancer.
While the couple initially kept their relationship private, Carey confirmed it to the Associated Press in 2017, stating, “I just don’t feel comfortable talking about my personal life. Me and my boyfriend don’t want to do that.” The recent breakup became apparent to fans last month when Tanaka did not join Carey on her Merry Christmas One and All! tour.
Tanaka, in his statement, expressed love and appreciation for Carey and her children, acknowledging their impact on his life. He also requested understanding, privacy, and respect during this sensitive time.
