Portugal fought back to secure a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in their Euro 2024 opener in Leipzig, thanks to a late winner by Francisco Conceicao.

Despite being one of the tournament favorites after an unbeaten qualifying campaign, Portugal faced a tough challenge. The Czech Republic took the lead in the second half with a stunning strike from Lukas Provod. However, their lead was short-lived as an own goal by Robin Hranac, after a parried header from Nuno Mendes, brought Portugal level.

Portugal dominated possession but struggled to convert their chances, with Czech goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek making crucial saves. Cristiano Ronaldo, playing in his record sixth European Championship, had multiple opportunities but couldn’t find the net.

In stoppage time, 21-year-old substitute Francisco Conceicao scored the decisive goal, ensuring a memorable win for Portugal. The result highlighted Portugal’s determination and depth, key attributes that fans hope will take them far in the tournament.

The Czech Republic, set up in a defensive formation by coach Ivan Hasek, put up a resilient fight and nearly secured a draw. Despite the loss, their performance offered positives as they prepare for their remaining group matches against Turkey and Georgia.

This opening match demonstrated Portugal’s ability to overcome challenges and reinforced the excitement and unpredictability of Euro 2024.
