Supreme Court Upholds Governor Francis Nwifuru's Victory in Ebonyi State Governorship Election

The Supreme Court has affirmed Governor Francis Ogbonnaya Nwifuru, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the duly elected Governor of Ebonyi State following the gubernatorial poll on March 18th.

Prior to this ruling, both the tribunal and the Appeal Court had already dismissed the petitions, upholding the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of the APC Candidate.

Justice Tijani Abubakar JSC, delivering the lead judgment, declared the appeal filed by Chukwuma Odii of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as lacking in merit.

The court emphasized that any petition alleging non-qualification must be substantiated with grounds based on Section 177 of the Constitution.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court clarified that once a candidate is sponsored by their party, they are inherently qualified to participate in the election.

This decisive affirmation by the Supreme Court solidifies Governor Francis Nwifuru’s position as the rightfully elected Governor of Ebonyi State, bringing legal clarity to the electoral process.
