Supreme Court Upholds Farouk Lawan's Five-Year Sentence for $500,000 Bribe

The Supreme Court has confirmed the five-year prison sentence for Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, as decided by the Court of Appeal.

In 2021, Lawan was convicted for accepting a $500,000 bribe from businessman Femi Otedola, the Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd. The Court of Appeal’s 2022 judgment, which sustained Lawan’s five-year sentence for count three of the three-count charge, was unanimously endorsed by a five-member panel in a recent ruling.

Justice John Okoro prepared the lead judgment, and Justice Tijjani Abubakar, who read it on Friday, declared Lawan’s appeal lacked merit and subsequently dismissed it.
