In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, the National Cybercrime Center of the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended three individuals believed to be the masterminds behind the microblogging platform, Gistlover. The suspects, Adebukola Kolapo, Nnedum Micheal Somtomchukwu, and Isaac Akpokighe, aged 27, 25, and 30, respectively, face charges of conspiracy, cyberstalking, and threats to life.
Gistlover, known for its cyberstalking, incitement, and blackmail activities, has long been a source of public concern. The police statement, delivered by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, outlines the suspects’ roles within the Gistlover Family syndicate and the illicit operations they conducted.
Adebukola Kolapo, a.k.a Omo oba Gistlover, played a significant role in creating over 80% of the Gistlover pages, contributing to cyberstalking and the dissemination of defamatory content. The arrest revealed his involvement in laundering money acquired through illegal activities.
Nnedum Somtochukwu, the second suspect, aided the syndicate by redirecting traffic to new Gistlover pages whenever the platform faced sanctions. He received incentives for his contributions, including referrals for promotions.
The third suspect, Isaac Akpokighe, imitated Gistlover’s model, creating multiple pages to mirror the blog’s activities. Digital forensics uncovered four Gistlover pages created by Akpokighe, reposting defamatory content against the complainant and other notable figures.
The police emphasized that these individuals would face charges in court once the investigation concludes. The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, expressed strong warnings against partnerships supporting illegal activities of such blogs.
As the Nigeria Police Force continues its commitment to ensuring citizens’ safety in both physical and digital spaces, this operation marks a significant stride in curbing cybercrimes.
