Ex-Corper Turns NYSC Allowance Into Thriving Food Business Amid Challenges

Gladys Adija, a 27-year-old single mother of two, recently launched a foodstuffs business after saving up her NYSC allowance despite facing criticism for her thriftiness during her service year in Plateau state.

In an interview with PUNCH, Gladys recounted her experience of staying with a friend near her primary assignment location to cut down on expenses. Despite receiving an allowance of N8,000 monthly, she managed to save N320,000 by being extremely economical.

During her service year, Gladys took up additional jobs like cleaning, washing, and tutoring to supplement her income. She emphasized that her financial constraints compelled her to decline social invitations and focus on her goals.

Gladys explained how her frugal lifestyle earned her the nickname ‘stingy coco’ from unaware friends, highlighting the sacrifices she made to secure her future. Now, with her savings, she has successfully launched a foodstuffs business, showcasing the power of perseverance and prudent financial management.
