Defence Headquarters Declares IPOB Leader Simon Ekpa and 96 Others Wanted for Terrorism

The Defence Headquarters in Abuja has issued a wanted declaration for Simon Ekpa, a leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), alongside 96 others across the country.

Ekpa, known for his affiliation with a faction of IPOB, has been cited for his involvement in organizing the Monday sit-at-home protests in the South-East region. The DHQ’s banner, displaying images of the suspects, identifies them as wanted for terrorism, violent extremism, and secessionist threats.

Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the names and pictures of the wanted individuals, who are spread across various zones in Nigeria.

The list includes names from the North East, North West, North Central, and South-East, encompassing insurgents, militants, and violent criminals. Notable figures from the North West and North East include leaders associated with banditry and terrorism activities.

In the North-Central and South-East, Ekpa and other individuals associated with IPOB are listed as wanted, indicating a focus on combating separatist movements in these regions.

Ekpa’s past involvement in anti-election activities and threats against government proceedings, particularly in the South-East, have drawn attention to his activities. Despite his arrest in Finland in 2023, Ekpa remains active on social media platforms, advocating for Biafran independence.

The DHQ’s declaration reflects ongoing efforts to address security challenges posed by extremist groups and individuals across Nigeria.
