Gospel Singer Nathaniel Bassey Petitions Police Over Defamation

Nigerian gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has lodged a complaint with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, accusing four individuals of defamation and cyberstalking.

Bassey’s legal team submitted the petition on April 1, 2024, alleging that the social media users falsely claimed that he fathered a child with fellow gospel singer Mercy Chinwo.

Last week, these individuals spread the false allegation on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), causing it to go viral.

In response, Bassey’s lawyers emphasized the serious impact of such false accusations on his reputation and personal life.

The petition highlighted that such defamatory statements not only harm Bassey’s image but also have broader consequences on his personal and professional relationships.

The lawyers urged the police to investigate the matter and prosecute the suspects, identified as Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and Dj Spoiltkid.

The social media posts by these individuals were deemed as character assassination, violating Sections 373 and 375 of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

Bassey’s legal team stressed the need for justice in this matter, highlighting the potential long-term repercussions of such defamatory statements.

They called for swift action to arrest and prosecute the suspects, serving as a deterrent to others who may engage in similar acts in the future.
