Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, has taken the decision to suspend ongoing examinations indefinitely after a tragic incident involving the fatal attack on a final-year student, Ayinla Fabiyi, by suspected cultists on campus.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Odubela Ayotunde, confirmed in a statement that the management condemned the heinous act and expressed condolences to Fabiyi’s family. The suspension of exams, initially scheduled for Thursday and Friday, came as a response to the incident.
According to Odubela, the attack occurred following the conclusion of an examination session, during which 400-level students were celebrating outside the lecture theatre. Fabiyi, a History and Diplomatic Studies student, was reportedly seized by unidentified individuals, initially assumed to be part of the celebration due to his birthday. However, suspicion arose when Fabiyi resisted being taken away, leading to a struggle that culminated near the university’s CENVOS building.
Security personnel intervened promptly, prompting the assailants to flee. Fabiyi, severely injured and bleeding profusely, was rushed to the University Health Centre and later transferred to the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, for further treatment. Despite efforts, he tragically passed away while being transferred to Babcock University Teaching Hospital due to the severity of his head injuries.
Odubela clarified that contrary to rumors, there was no gunfire during the incident, and Fabiyi was not abducted from an examination hall. The university has reported the incident to the Nigerian Police, leading to some arrests.
The university administration assured students and parents of its commitment to maintaining campus security and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards cultism and other forms of misconduct. They appreciated the swift response of the police in stabilizing the situation on campus.
As investigations continue and mourning ensues, TASUED remains focused on supporting the affected family and ensuring a safe academic environment for its students.
