A Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence over Myanmar, resulting in one passenger dead and at least 71 others injured. The Boeing 777-300ER, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, was midway through its journey when the turbulence struck, prompting an emergency landing in Bangkok.
Passenger Andrew Davies described the chaotic scene, with items flying around the cabin and passengers sustaining injuries. One British man, identified as Geoff Kitchen, tragically passed away from a suspected heart condition. Medical teams tended to the injured, with some passengers requiring hospitalization for severe injuries.
The incident prompted an outpouring of condolences from Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong, who expressed sympathy for the deceased passenger’s family and apologized for the traumatic experience endured by all onboard.
Investigations into the incident are underway, with both Singaporean and US authorities involved.
The turbulence likely occurred due to rapidly developing thunderstorms, common in the region during this time of year. While turbulence-related accidents are common, Singapore Airlines is widely regarded as one of the world’s safest carriers.
Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, offered support to Singapore Airlines and referred further inquiries to the airline and local authorities.
