Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has officially suspended his independent presidential campaign and endorsed former President Donald Trump, a move that could have significant implications for the 2024 election. Kennedy, the son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, cited ongoing conflicts with the Democratic Party and media censorship as reasons for his decision.
Speaking in Phoenix, Kennedy criticized the Democratic Party for what he described as a “sham primary” and claimed that both he and Trump had faced legal attacks from the party. By endorsing Trump, Kennedy aims to prevent his candidacy from acting as a spoiler in the tight race between Trump and Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.
Kennedy’s campaign has requested that swing states remove his name from the ballot, although he plans to remain on the ballot in solidly “red” or “blue” states where his candidacy is less likely to impact the final outcome. His decision to back Trump could sway some of his supporters, particularly those who are dissatisfied with the current political establishment, to support the former president.
Kennedy’s departure from the race comes after months of dwindling poll numbers and financial struggles. Despite early momentum, his support had dropped to 6% in recent surveys, and his campaign was running low on funds. Nevertheless, Kennedy’s endorsement of Trump adds a new layer of complexity to an already unpredictable election, with potential consequences for both major parties as the race enters its final stages.
