Putin Congratulates ‘Courageous’ Trump, Expresses Willingness for Talks as World Leaders React to U.S. Election Outcome

Trump and Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin extended congratulations to Donald Trump on his presidential election win, calling him “courageous” and stating his openness to discussions. Speaking at a forum in Sochi, Putin acknowledged the challenges Trump has faced, highlighting his resilience amid past political adversity. He also referenced Trump’s handling of an assassination attempt earlier in the year, noting that the former president’s response “showed courage.”

Putin also addressed Trump’s campaign promise to resolve the Ukraine conflict swiftly, saying the claim “deserves attention,” though Trump has yet to provide specifics. Trump, in response, indicated he was also open to talks with Putin, telling NBC News, “I think we’ll speak.”

The Kremlin’s warm remarks underscore a shift in Russia’s stance, as Putin previously expressed support for the Biden-Harris administration. However, Trump’s anti-establishment approach appears to align with Moscow’s interests. Accusations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election to support Trump’s campaign continue to be a point of controversy, though a 2019 investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller found no conclusive evidence of collusion.

Elsewhere, leaders attending the European Political Community summit in Budapest reacted to Trump’s election, with many European leaders expressing concern over potential shifts in U.S. foreign policy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported a “warm” and “productive” conversation with Trump but emphasized the importance of continued U.S. support in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer assured Zelensky that Britain’s commitment to Ukraine remains “iron-clad.”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, an ally of Trump, expressed optimism about stronger ties but acknowledged potential challenges in trade relations, as Trump has promised a 10% tariff on all imports. European leaders agreed on the need for Europe to assume greater responsibility for its own security.
