Labour’s Sam Carling, a 22-year-old Cambridge University researcher, has made history as the first MP born in the 21st century, winning the North West Cambridgeshire seat by a narrow margin of 39 votes.
Carling, who ousted veteran Conservative MP Shailesh Vara, hopes his victory will inspire other young people to engage in politics and tackle issues like NHS staff workload and lack of local dentists. Despite his young age, Carling has significant experience, having served as a city councillor and been active in Cambridge’s Labour Club.
