A gunman was arrested on Sunday, September 15, 2024, after shots were fired near Donald Trump while he played golf at his West Palm Beach course in Florida. Secret Service agents spotted the assailant, armed with an AK-47-style rifle, hiding in bushes near the course, just a few hundred yards from Trump.
The agents quickly responded, firing at the suspect, who fled the scene, leaving behind his weapon and two backpacks. The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Hawaii, was apprehended by police a short time later on a nearby highway.
Trump was unharmed in the incident and praised the swift actions of his Secret Service detail. This is the second such incident in two months, following a shooting at a July rally where Trump was grazed by a bullet.
Authorities are investigating the suspect’s motive, but his social media activity suggests political involvement. The FBI and Secret Service continue to assess the situation as concerns over candidate safety grow amid the tense 2024 election race.
