A federal judge in Florida dismissed the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump on Monday. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon ruled that Special Counsel Jack Smith’s appointment by Attorney General Merrick Garland was illegal, as it did not receive Senate approval.
The decision halts a criminal case that had been one of the most significant legal threats Trump faced. Cannon’s 93-page ruling argued that Garland’s appointment of Smith violated constitutional procedures. Trump’s legal team argued that the appointment of Smith, a private citizen at the time, was unconstitutional without Senate confirmation. Cannon agreed, stating that Smith’s actions since his appointment were unlawful.
Trump praised the ruling, urging other cases against him to be dismissed as well. Smith’s team announced plans to appeal the decision, maintaining that the Attorney General had the authority to appoint a special counsel.
This ruling delays the trial and adds another layer of complexity to Trump’s ongoing legal battles.
