Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet provider, has significantly raised its prices in Nigeria, nearly doubling its monthly subscription fee and increasing the cost of hardware. The company has announced a 97% hike in its standard residential subscription, which will now cost N75,000 per month, up from the previous N38,000. For new users, the cost of Starlink hardware has also risen by 34%, from N440,000 to N590,000.
The price increase for existing customers will take effect on October 31, 2024, while new customers are subject to the higher prices immediately. Starlink cited “excessive levels of inflation” in Nigeria as the reason for the steep price adjustments.
In addition to the residential package, the company also increased prices for its mobile services. The mobile regional (roam unlimited) plan now costs N167,000, and the mobile global (global roam) plan has surged to N717,000.
Starlink’s service, which launched in Nigeria in January 2023, quickly gained traction despite higher costs compared to local internet service providers (ISPs). Its satellite-based internet has proven particularly popular in areas with poor connectivity, helping the company become the third-largest ISP in Nigeria by the end of 2023, with over 23,000 users.
While the price hike may put additional financial pressure on customers, Starlink remains a key option for those in remote areas with limited internet access. The company has allowed customers the option to cancel their service at any time without penalty if they are unable or unwilling to meet the new pricing.
