Google is enhancing Gmail with new AI-powered features under its Gemini initiative, aimed at improving productivity for users across web and mobile platforms. One significant update includes bringing the Summarise feature, previously exclusive to the web, to Gmail’s iOS and Android apps. This feature condenses lengthy email threads into concise summaries, enabling users to grasp key information quickly without reading through entire conversations.
For web users, Gmail now integrates a Gemini side panel powered by the Gemini 1.5 Pro AI model. Positioned on the right-hand side of the interface, this panel offers functionalities such as summarising email threads, drafting emails, suggesting responses, and allowing users to ask specific questions related to emails.
These AI enhancements are initially rolling out to Google Workspace users with specific subscriptions, including Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, and Google One AI Premium. Google plans to introduce additional features like Contextual Smart Reply and Gmail Q&A to the mobile apps in the near future.
While these tools promise increased efficiency, Google advises users to exercise caution, particularly in critical email communications, as AI functionalities can occasionally produce errors. These updates reflect Google’s ongoing efforts to integrate advanced AI capabilities into its products, aiming to streamline user workflows and enhance productivity across its suite of applications.
