Greenwood, 22, expressed his frustration after allegedly not receiving a free-kick and was penalized for a foul. Referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez’s post-match report claimed Greenwood used explicit language, saying ‘f*** you’ towards the official. However, Getafe head coach Jose Bordalas disputed this account, stating that Greenwood had communicated ‘f*** sake’ to his teammates and had not directed any insults at the referee.
The dismissal compounded Getafe’s challenges, as Greenwood’s red card followed Juanmi Latasa’s first-half expulsion, and later, Damian Suarez received a straight red card for dissent after being substituted in the 70th minute. Despite Greenwood’s contributions this season, including five goals in 16 matches, Getafe suffered a 2-0 defeat and maintains their eighth position in La Liga.
Greenwood, who joined Getafe on a season-long loan deal, found himself available for transfer after Manchester United decided against reintegrating him into the first-team squad. The decision came after an internal investigation initiated in February, following the discontinuation of legal proceedings by the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service against Greenwood for attempted rape, assault, and coercive control. The forward consistently denied all alleged offenses.
