Democratic Representative Cori Bush Faces Federal Probe Over Security Spending

Democratic U.S. Representative Cori Bush, part of the prominent progressive group “The Squad,” is under investigation by the Justice Department for her campaign’s security spending. Bush, who has faced threats since before taking office, revealed that the probe includes allegations related to her husband’s role in her security team.

Bush insists on her cooperation with the investigation, emphasizing the use of campaign funds for security purposes and denying any misuse of federal tax dollars. The scrutiny extends to the Federal Elections Commission, the House Ethics Committee, and the Office of Congressional Ethics.

The Missouri lawmaker, known for her activism and economic hardships before entering office, defended the employment of her husband, Cortney Merrits, in her security detail. Despite complaints, an Office of Congressional Ethics investigation found his security work legitimate and not overpaid.

While facing right-wing criticism and baseless complaints, Bush remains resilient. Multiple ongoing investigations are examining her spending, with public records revealing $60,000 allocated to her husband out of the $572,000 spent on security in 2022.

As a member of The Squad, Bush gained recognition for her overnight Capitol protest against the end of a COVID-related eviction moratorium. Amid the probes, she expresses optimism about the outcomes and looks forward to the resolution of all pending investigations.
