Ayokunle Odekunle, Resilient Nigerian Lawyer in Canada, Passes Away at 34

Ayokunle Odekunle, a dedicated Nigerian legal practitioner based in Alberta, Canada, breathed his last on Friday after a valiant battle with gastric cancer. Popularly known as Oddy, Odekunle’s inspiring journey came to an end at the age of 34, leaving a legacy of legal brilliance and unwavering commitment to justice.

The news of Odekunle’s passing was conveyed by Kaycee Madu, a former Minister of Justice and Solicitor-General of Alberta, who shared the profound sadness of losing a dear brother, friend, and colleague on X (formerly Twitter). Odekunle’s struggle against stage 4 cancer, diagnosed in 2020, showcased his resilience and determination.

“Ayo was a brilliant young lawyer who sacrificed so much to be called to the Alberta Bar this past June whilst terminally ill. We had hoped for a miracle,” expressed Madu in his statement.

Despite facing a terminal illness, Odekunle actively pursued his legal career, attaining the prestigious call to the Alberta Bar in June 2023. His dedication and passion for justice were evident throughout his professional journey.

“In his lifetime, he stood for justice, merit, and good governance. Ayo didn’t care where you come from, religion or ethnicity, and so long as you are a good person who stood for good, he would support you. He wanted the best for his fellow human beings,” added Madu.

Odekunle, an alumnus of the University of Ibadan, graduated in 2011 and was subsequently called to the Nigerian Bar. Beyond his contributions to litigation, he made a mark through his writings, publishing op-eds and commentaries on platforms like YNaija. His presence extended to television programs, where he shared his insights.

He leaves behind his wife, Halima, and two beautiful young children. Ayokunle Odekunle’s departure is mourned by friends, associates, and the legal community, but his indomitable spirit and contributions to justice will be remembered as an enduring legacy.
