Darwin Nunez scored as Uruguay started their Copa America campaign with a 3-1 victory over Panama in Miami, Florida.
Liverpool striker Nunez, 25, volleyed home with five minutes remaining to double Uruguay’s lead after defender Ronald Araujo opened the scoring with a curling effort in the 16th minute. Left-back Matias Vina added a third goal during stoppage time before Michael Amir Murillo scored a consolation goal for Panama.
Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa expressed optimism about his team’s prospects, saying, “We will build match by match. Uruguay has players of a very good level and we need to see if I can build with those players.”
Uruguay has been in fine form, having recently defeated Argentina and Brazil in World Cup qualifiers, and are expected to impress in this tournament.
In another Group C match, Christian Pulisic scored and assisted as the United States beat Bolivia 2-0 in Arlington, Texas. The AC Milan forward curled in an opener after three minutes and set up Monaco striker Folarin Balogun for a second goal just before half-time.
