The U.S. Soccer Federation announced the firing of Gregg Berhalter as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team following a disappointing performance in the Copa America, where the team was eliminated in the group stage. This decision is effective immediately.
U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone expressed gratitude for Berhalter’s efforts, stating, “We are now focused on working with our Sporting Director Matt Crocker to find the right person to lead the USMNT into a new era of on-field success.”
Crocker, who will lead the search for a new coach, emphasized the importance of finding someone who can maximize the team’s potential ahead of the 2026 World Cup. “Our immediate focus is on finding a coach who can maximize our potential as we continue to prepare for the 2026 World Cup, and we have already begun our search process,” he said.
Berhalter, who compiled a 44-17-13 record in 74 matches, led the team to a successful 2022 World Cup qualification campaign and won the 2021 Gold Cup and two Concacaf Nations League titles. Despite these achievements, the recent Copa America performance and a group stage exit on home soil led to his dismissal.
The U.S. team, featuring young talents like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, had a promising start with a 2-0 win against Bolivia but suffered crucial losses to Panama and Uruguay, sealing their early exit from the tournament. The early elimination was seen as a setback following the team’s round-of-16 finish in the 2022 World Cup.
With less than two years remaining before the U.S. co-hosts the 2026 World Cup, U.S. Soccer aims to find a coach who can lead the team to success on the global stage.
