The U.S. artistic swimming team made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing their first Olympic medal in two decades with a stunning silver. The team captured global attention earlier in the week with a viral performance that featured an underwater moonwalk during their technical routine, set to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.”
The Americans began their Olympic journey strong, earning high marks for their creative and intricate routines. Their viral technical performance placed them in contention early on, but it was their “sorceress”-themed acrobatic routine that solidified their position, ultimately finishing second with a total score of 914.3421 points.
China, known for its dominance in artistic swimming, claimed the gold with a commanding score, leaving the U.S. team thrilled with their hard-fought silver. Spain completed the podium, taking bronze.
Team members expressed their overwhelming joy and pride in achieving this milestone. “It feels incredible,” said swimmer Daniela Ramirez. “This is everything to us. I’ve never been with a team that feels as magical as this, and I’m so grateful to represent our country.”
For Anita Alvarez, who is competing in her third Olympics after a near-tragic incident at the 2022 World Championships, the silver medal is a particularly poignant victory. “The whole journey has been so challenging, but to be here with this team and leave with a silver medal is just the cherry on top,” she shared.
Despite the celebration, the team isn’t done yet. Jaime Czarkowski and Megumi Field, both key members of the silver-winning team, are set to compete in the duet event, aiming to add to their medal haul. “We’re really taking in this moment, but we’re excited to get back to work and compete again,” Field said.
