Real Madrid has confirmed that legendary midfielder Toni Kroos will retire from football after representing Germany in Euro 2024.
Kroos, 34, began his career at Bayern Munich before joining Real Madrid in 2014. During his time with Madrid, he has won four La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies, playing a crucial role in their success over the past decade. He was also a key player in Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad.
In a statement, Real Madrid expressed their gratitude to Kroos, calling him “one of the great legends of our club and world football.” Club president Florentino Pérez added, “Toni Kroos is one of the great players in the history of Real Madrid and this club will always be his home.”
Kroos announced his decision on Instagram, reflecting on his decade with Real Madrid. “July 17th, 2014, was the day my life changed,” he wrote. “It was the start of a new chapter at the biggest club in the world. After 10 years, this chapter comes to an end. I will always cherish the incredible support from the Madridistas.”
Kroos returned to the German national team under coach Julian Nagelsmann, having previously retired from international duty in 2021. His retirement will mark the end of an illustrious career, with Kroos choosing to leave the sport at the peak of his performance.
Real Madrid will conclude their La Liga season against Real Betis and will face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1. A victory would earn Kroos his fifth Champions League title, putting him on par with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Reflecting on his decision, Kroos said, “I am happy and proud to retire at the right time and to have made this choice on my own terms. My ambition was always to finish my career at the peak of my performance level.”
Real Madrid’s statement celebrated Kroos’s contributions, highlighting his 22 titles in 463 games for the club. Kroos’s departure will leave a significant legacy, as he is remembered for his excellence on the field and his dedication to the club.
