Nigerian track sensation Tobi Amusan will not be competing in the final of the Women’s 100m hurdles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, a surprising outcome for the athlete who had been a strong medal contender.
Amusan finished third in her semi-final heat with a time of 12.55 seconds. Unfortunately, this time was not quick enough to secure her a spot in the final, as she ranked ninth overall. The top qualifiers in her heat, Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent and France’s Cyrena Samba-Mayela, posted faster times of 12.44 and 12.52 seconds, respectively, claiming the last two places in the final.
This result is a setback for Amusan, who captured the world’s attention in 2022 by setting a new world record of 12.12 seconds at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Her performance in Paris has dampened Nigeria’s hopes for an Olympic medal in track and field, with the games concluding on Sunday.
Amusan’s narrow miss highlights the fiercely competitive nature of the semi-finals, where even the smallest margin can make the difference between reaching the podium or falling short.
