The Football Association (FA) has announced Thomas Tuchel as the new head coach of the England men’s national team. The former Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain manager will take charge on January 1, 2025, succeeding interim coach Lee Carsley, who will lead the team through the UEFA Nations League matches in November.
Tuchel, 51, brings a wealth of experience and success to the role, having won multiple domestic and international titles, including the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2021. His appointment follows Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down after England’s defeat in the Euro 2024 final.
Tuchel expressed his excitement about leading England, saying, “It’s a huge privilege to manage this talented group of players, and I am looking forward to making the nation proud.”
Anthony Barry, Tuchel’s former assistant at Chelsea and Bayern, will join him as his assistant coach. The FA described Tuchel’s arrival as a major coup, with FA CEO Mark Bullingham stating, “Thomas brings vast expertise, and together with Anthony, they give us the best chance of winning the 2026 World Cup.”
Tuchel’s first major task will be preparing England for the qualification process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a focus on delivering success on the global stage.
