Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka expressed her sorrow after the tragic death of her ex-boyfriend, Konstantin Koltsov, a former professional ice hockey player. Koltsov, 42, was found dead in a Miami hotel, where he was supporting Sabalenka during the Miami Open. While they were no longer together, Sabalenka shared that his passing deeply saddened her and asked for privacy for herself and his family during this difficult time.
Despite the loss, Sabalenka chose to continue playing in the tournament and faced her close friend Paula Badosa in the Miami Open. Badosa, acknowledging the tough situation, expressed discomfort in playing against Sabalenka but also emphasized her support for her friend during this trying period.
Koltsov’s death was initially reported as an “apparent suicide” by the police, although doubts have been raised by his ex-wife, Yulia Mikhailova. She mentioned that Koltsov may have been heavily intoxicated at the time of his death and questioned whether it was a deliberate act. Mikhailova emphasized that there were no signs of suicidal thoughts in his behavior leading up to the incident.
Sabalenka received support from fellow players like Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki, who expressed their sympathy and offered their support during this challenging time. Koltsov, who had been a regular presence at Sabalenka’s tournaments, was remembered by the tennis community as well as his former ice hockey team.
The circumstances surrounding Koltsov’s death remain unclear, with investigations ongoing, but Sabalenka and those close to her continue to mourn the loss of her ex-boyfriend and remember him fondly.
