Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone set a new world record in the 400-meter hurdles at the U.S. Olympic Trials, clocking in at 50.65 seconds. This record-breaking performance secured her a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team, alongside Anna Cockrell and Jasmine Jones, who finished second and third, respectively.
McLaughlin-Levrone, the reigning Olympic gold medalist and world No. 1, expressed her surprise and gratitude after the race, praising God and noting that she did not expect to achieve such a time. Her previous world record was 50.68 seconds, set at the 2022 World Championships.
Cockrell, who set a personal best of 52.64 seconds in the final, highlighted the significance of this achievement and the progress made through training. Despite her focused demeanor, McLaughlin-Levrone was visibly emotional upon realizing her record-breaking performance.
Dalilah Muhammad, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist and 2021 silver medalist, finished sixth and did not qualify for the Paris Olympics. Cockrell acknowledged Muhammad’s impact on the sport, expressing her gratitude and admiration for her mentorship and contributions.
The men’s 400-meter hurdles saw Rai Benjamin, CJ Allen, and Trevor Bassitt secure their spots on the Olympic team. Benjamin set a meet record with a time of 46.46 seconds, followed by Allen at 47.81 and Bassitt at 47.82.
McLaughlin-Levrone, expected to compete in the 4×400 relay team as well, remains focused on further improving her performance. Her coach, Bobby Kersee, emphasized the importance of trust in her fitness and execution. Looking ahead, McLaughlin-Levrone aims to continue making history and potentially achieve a sub-50-second time in the 400-meter hurdles.
