Switzerland vs Italy: Switzerland Ousts Defending Champs Italy 2-0 to Reach Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals

Switzerland secured a spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Italy in Berlin. Goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas sealed the win, knocking out the reigning champions.

Luciano Spalletti made six changes to the Italian lineup, but it didn’t improve their performance. Switzerland dominated, with Breel Embolo almost scoring early before Freuler netted the first goal from a Vargas cross. Vargas then scored just after halftime, capitalizing on Italy’s mistake from the kickoff.

Italy struggled to respond, their best chance being a Fabian Schar header that hit their own crossbar. With this defeat, Italy’s reign as European champions ended, while Switzerland advanced to face either England or Slovakia in the quarter-finals.

Granit Xhaka played a key role, controlling the midfield and inspiring Switzerland’s performance. His impressive play, following a successful season with Bayer Leverkusen, has been vital for the Swiss team.

The Swiss side’s cohesive play starkly contrasted Italy’s disjointed efforts, highlighting a worrying lack of talent and cohesion in the Italian squad. Only Gianluigi Donnarumma and Nicolo Barella stood out, with little else promising for Italy’s future.

Ruben Vargas, the standout player, created the first goal and scored the second, showcasing his attacking and defensive skills. Switzerland’s victory sets up a challenging quarter-final match, continuing their impressive Euro 2024 campaign.
