Nigeria’s Super Eagles kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Ademola Lookman, fresh off his Ballon d’Or nomination, opened the scoring just before halftime with a dazzling solo effort that saw him dribble past three defenders before calmly slotting the ball into the net. The Atalanta forward was a constant threat throughout the match, showcasing the form that earned him a place among the world’s best players.
In the second half, Benin tried to respond, but Nigeria’s defense, led by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, held firm. Steve Mounie of Benin came close with a free-kick, but Nwabali was equal to the task.
The Super Eagles extended their lead in the 79th minute when substitute Victor Osimhen, recently signed by Galatasaray, volleyed in a cross from Wilfred Ndidi. Osimhen’s strike demonstrated why he is considered one of Africa’s top forwards.
Just minutes later, Lookman sealed the victory with his second goal of the night, heading in a cross from Moses Simon to secure all three points for Nigeria.
The win was particularly sweet for Nigeria, avenging their previous loss to Benin in a World Cup qualifier earlier this year—a defeat that led to the resignation of then-coach Finidi George.
With this victory, interim coach Austin Eguavoen has put Nigeria at the top of their qualification group, which also includes Libya and Rwanda, who drew in their opening match. The Super Eagles will face Rwanda next on Tuesday, September 10, in Kigali, while Benin takes on Libya on the same day.
