On Thursday, June 6, the Senate passed the “National Anti-Doping Bill 2024.” This bill aims to prevent Nigerian athletes from using performance-enhancing substances during or after sports competitions.
President Bola Tinubu requested the Senate to enact this law, which was read on the floor by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin during the plenary session.
The purpose of the bill is to implement the international convention against doping in sports in Nigeria, especially in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games in France. It also seeks to establish the Nigeria anti-doping center to ensure compliance with international standards set by the World Anti-Doping Code.
The bill’s passage followed the consideration and approval of the report by the Senate committee on judiciary, human rights, and legal matters during the plenary session.
The chairman of the committee, Senator Mohammed Monguno presented the report.
Senators adopted the recommendations of the committee and approved that the Bill be read for a third time when it was put to a voice vote by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary.
