Manchester City’s Phil Foden has been named the Premier League Player of the Season for the 2023/24 campaign. The 23-year-old England international had an outstanding season, scoring 17 goals and providing 8 assists in 34 league games, helping City to the brink of their fourth consecutive league title.
Foden topped an eight-man shortlist that included his teammates Erling Haaland and Cole Palmer, as well as Alexander Isak, Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice, Virgil van Dijk, and Ollie Watkins. This marks the fifth consecutive year a Manchester City player has won the award, following in the footsteps of Kevin De Bruyne (twice), Rúben Dias, and Haaland.
“To win this award is an achievement that I am extremely proud of,” Foden said. “The Premier League is acknowledged as the greatest league in the world, and it is a pleasure to have been nominated with so many other great players who have all enjoyed special seasons for their clubs. I’d like to thank all of the City staff, coaches, and especially my teammates because without them this wouldn’t be possible. And I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me as the award means a lot.”
In addition to the Player of the Season award, Foden also won the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year earlier this month.
Cole Palmer was named the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season after a stellar debut campaign with Chelsea, scoring 22 goals and making 10 assists. Palmer joined Chelsea from Manchester City on deadline day and outshone competition from Foden, Haaland, Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, Kobbie Mainoo, and Destiny Udogie.
Foden’s achievements this season also include winning the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. He has the opportunity to add more silverware with City set to play their final league game against West Ham and the FA Cup final against Manchester United on May 25.
