Oscar Piastri clinched his first Formula 1 victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, steering McLaren to a 1-2 finish alongside teammate Lando Norris. Lewis Hamilton rounded off the podium for Mercedes, marking his 200th career podium finish.
Piastri’s triumph was set up from the start when he overtook Norris at Turn 1. Despite a late-race strategic pit stop that saw Norris briefly take the lead, team orders ultimately restored Piastri to the front. This result gave McLaren its first 1-2 finish since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix.
Norris initially led the race from pole position, but Piastri and Max Verstappen challenged him into Turn 1. Piastri emerged ahead, while Verstappen was instructed to return second place to Norris following an investigation for track limits.
Hamilton’s early pit stop strategy saw him climb to third place. Meanwhile, Verstappen, on fresher tires, attempted to overtake Hamilton but was unable to succeed in a close battle.
Drama unfolded on lap 63 when Verstappen and Hamilton collided, sending Verstappen off track and dropping him to fifth behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The stewards reviewed the incident but issued no penalties.
Norris eventually conceded the lead back to Piastri on lap 69, securing the Australian’s maiden F1 victory. Norris finished second, and Hamilton completed the podium. Leclerc and Verstappen finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Verstappen remains the leader in the Drivers’ Championship, with Norris moving into second place.
