Nigerian powerlifter Onyinyechi Mark has claimed Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, setting a new world record in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category with an incredible lift of 150kg.

Mark’s victory on Friday saw her surpass China’s Cui Jianjin, who secured the silver with a 140kg lift, and Mexico’s Amelia Perez, who took bronze with a 130kg lift. This triumph solidifies Mark’s position as one of the top powerlifters in the world and highlights Nigeria’s continued dominance in Paralympic powerlifting.

Earlier in the competition, Mark shattered the previous Paralympic record of 145kg, which was also held by a Nigerian, Lucy Ejike. Her final lift of 150kg not only earned her the gold medal but also set a new world record, bringing immense pride to her country.

In a congratulatory message, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, John Enoh, praised Mark for her outstanding achievement, saying, “You have brought immense pride and joy to Nigerians and showcased the resilient Nigerian spirit. We celebrate you as our champion.”

Mark’s gold medal marks Nigeria’s third medal at the 2024 Paralympics, following Eniola Bolaji’s historic bronze in Para-Badminton and Esther Nworgu’s silver in the women’s 41kg para-powerlifting category.

Nigeria has a rich history in Paralympic powerlifting, consistently producing world-class athletes. At the 2021 Para-powerlifting World Cup in Manchester, Team Nigeria emerged as the top-performing nation, winning eight gold and three silver medals.

Mark’s latest victory continues this legacy, reinforcing Nigeria’s reputation as a powerhouse in Paralympic sports.
