Nigerian Midfielder Kelechi Nwakali Returns to England, Signs with Barnsley on Three-Year Deal

Kelechi Nwakali, the Nigerian international midfielder, has made a return to English football by signing a three-year contract with Barnsley FC. The 26-year-old joins the League One club from Portuguese side GD Chaves for an undisclosed fee.

Nwakali, who first came to England in 2016 when he signed with Premier League giants Arsenal, expressed his excitement about the move. “I knew this was an exciting opportunity for me, and I know I can bring a lot to the team,” Nwakali said in an interview with Barnsley’s official website. “I am looking forward to being back in England and making Oakwell my home for the next three years.”

During his time at Chaves, Nwakali made significant contributions, scoring one goal and registering four assists last season. His performances have not gone unnoticed, and Barnsley’s sporting director, Mladen Sormaz, believes the midfielder will add a new dimension to the team. “There is no doubt Kelechi is a really talented player who can offer our squad something different,” Sormaz commented.

Nwakali, who was named the MVP of the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup, has had a diverse career with stints in Spain’s SD Huesca and Ponferradina before moving to Portugal. He has also made four senior appearances for the Nigerian national team.

Barnsley, who began their 2024-25 League One campaign with a 2-1 home defeat to Mansfield Town, are looking to Nwakali to help bolster their midfield as they aim for a successful season. The club and its fans are hopeful that Nwakali’s experience and talent will make a significant impact at Oakwell.
