Brazil’s women’s football team secured a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in their opening match of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Gabriela Nunes scored the decisive goal in the first half, converting a well-placed assist from Martha. Despite Brazil’s dominance in possession, Nigeria’s Super Falcons mounted a resilient defense and created several scoring opportunities.
Nigeria, returning to the Olympics after a 16-year absence, had their best chance when Chiwendu Ihezuo’s header was saved by Brazil’s goalkeeper following a precise cross from Captain Rasheedat Ajibade. Despite Ajibade’s efforts to lead the attack, the Super Falcons were unable to find the equalizer.
Brazil controlled the match after taking the lead, preventing Nigeria from converting their opportunities. This victory extends Brazil’s unbeaten run against Nigeria to four matches, including their previous encounter at the 2008 Olympics, where Brazil won 3-1.
The loss puts Nigeria in a challenging position in Group C, which also includes reigning world champions Spain and Asian powerhouse Japan. The Super Falcons will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to face Spain on Sunday. Meanwhile, Brazil will look to secure their place in the next round with a match against Japan on the same day.
