Newcastle’s hopes of European qualification took a hit as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton in their final home game of the season.
The match saw Newcastle stumble in their pursuit of Europe, with Eddie Howe’s side now level on points with seventh-placed Chelsea after their victory over Nottingham Forest. They also lost ground on fifth-placed Tottenham, who moved six points clear after defeating Burnley.
Brighton took the lead through Joel Veltman, who capitalized on Newcastle’s slow start by scoring from close range after a corner. However, Newcastle responded just before halftime with Sean Longstaff finishing a well-worked move to equalize.
Despite Newcastle’s late rally, including an Anthony Gordon goal ruled out for offside, they couldn’t find a winning goal in the second half.
The draw leaves Newcastle’s European ambitions hanging in the balance, especially after Tottenham’s win. Now, they must wait to see if Chelsea and Manchester United can close the gap in their upcoming matches.
