Juan Izquierdo, a 27-year-old defender for Nacional, has tragically passed away after collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match against São Paulo in Brazil. The Uruguayan footballer lost consciousness in the 84th minute of the game on August 22 and was immediately rushed to Albert Einstein Hospital, where he was placed in intensive care.
Despite initial reports of his stable condition, the hospital later confirmed that Izquierdo had suffered cardiorespiratory arrest due to cardiac arrhythmia, leading to brain death. His club, Nacional, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “The entire club is in mourning over the irreplaceable loss of Juan Izquierdo. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and teammates.”
The news has sent shockwaves through the football community. CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez declared, “South American football is in mourning,” while Uruguayan star Luis Suarez added, “Pain and sadness are hard to put into words. May he rest in peace.”
