Mexico vs Ecuador: Ecuador Advances to Copa América Quarterfinals, Mexico Eliminated After 0-0 Draw

Ecuador secured a spot in the Copa América quarterfinals with a tense 0-0 draw against Mexico on Sunday. The result in Glendale, Arizona saw Ecuador advance due to a superior goal difference, despite both teams finishing with four points in Group B.

Mexico, needing a win to progress, dominated the game with several close attempts. Johan Vasquez forced a crucial save from Ecuadorian goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez, and Santiago Gimenez hit the post from close range. However, Mexico struggled to convert their chances into goals.

The match’s dramatic moment came in the final minutes of stoppage time when referee Mario Escobar initially awarded a penalty to Mexico after Ecuador’s Felix Torres appeared to foul Guillermo Martinez. However, the decision was overturned following a VAR review, which showed Torres had touched the ball.

Ecuador will now face defending champions Argentina in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Group B winners Venezuela, who defeated Jamaica 3-0, will take on Canada in the next round.
