Lionel Messi delivered a spectacular 11-minute hat trick to lead Inter Miami to a commanding 6-2 victory over the New England Revolution, setting a new Major League Soccer (MLS) single-season points record. The win on MLS Decision Day gave Miami 74 points for the season, surpassing the previous record of 73 set by the Revolution in 2021.
Messi entered the match in the 58th minute with Miami trailing 2-0. Within seconds of stepping onto the field, the Argentine superstar assisted Benjamin Cremaschi’s goal, sparking the comeback. Messi followed up with three goals of his own between the 78th and 89th minutes, completing his hat trick and securing the win.
Luis Suarez was also pivotal, scoring two first-half goals and assisting on two others. Both Messi and Suarez ended their debut MLS season with 20 goals each, with Messi adding 16 assists in 19 matches.
Despite New England’s early dominance, which saw them take a 2-0 lead in the first half, Inter Miami controlled the game, holding 65.8% possession and outshooting the Revolution 25-8. The Revolution’s goals came from Luca Langoni and Dylan Borrero, but they were unable to stop Miami’s relentless pressure.
With the Supporters’ Shield now in hand, Miami (22-4-8) will look ahead to their first playoff match, facing the winner of the Eastern Conference wild card clash between CF Montreal and Atlanta United.
