Marcelo Leaves Fluminense Following Clash with Coach Mano Menezes

Marcelo

Marcelo, former Real Madrid and Brazil defender, has left his boyhood club Fluminense after a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. The 36-year-old’s departure comes just a day after a disagreement with coach Mano Menezes during Fluminense’s 2-2 draw with Grêmio at Maracanã Stadium.

Marcelo was set to enter as a substitute late in the match, but Menezes decided against it after an exchange on the sidelines, stating, “I heard something I didn’t like, so I changed my mind.” Following this incident, Fluminense announced the contract termination, although they did not disclose specific reasons.

Marcelo returned to Fluminense in February 2023 after a brief stint with Olympiakos and had helped the club win both the Rio de Janeiro state championship and the Copa Libertadores. Despite the separation, the club emphasized its continued “institutional and emotional bonds” with Marcelo and expressed gratitude for his contributions.
