Manchester United have finalized a deal to sign Sekou Kone, an 18-year-old defensive midfielder from Malian club Guidars FC. Kone, who has been highly sought after by top European clubs, including Premier League rival Liverpool, is viewed as a promising talent with the potential to become a key player for United in the future.
Kone will initially join Manchester United’s Under-21 squad to help him adjust to life in England and the demands of Premier League football. The club is mindful of the significant cultural transition he will undergo and plans to integrate him gradually.
Despite his young age, Kone has already made a name for himself on the international stage, particularly with standout performances at the U-17 World Cup. His defensive prowess, including the most interceptions and defensive duels won during the tournament, caught the attention of scouts worldwide.
United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, sees Kone as a long-term option for the No. 6 position, an area the club has been keen to strengthen. The signing of Kone reflects Manchester United’s broader strategy under their new-look recruitment team, led by Christopher Vivell, who played a key role in securing the young talent.
This summer, Manchester United has been active in the transfer market, already bringing in Leny Yoro from Lille, Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, and Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich. Kone’s arrival marks the club’s commitment to building for the future while also enhancing their current squad.
In addition to Kone, United is also reportedly close to signing another prodigy, 16-year-old Chido Obi-Martin, a former Arsenal academy standout who scored 32 goals for their U-18 team last season.
Kone’s development will be closely watched as he begins his journey with one of the world’s most prestigious football clubs, with hopes that he will eventually become a key figure in Manchester United’s first team.
