Manchester United has officially dismissed Erik ten Hag as head coach following the team’s disappointing start to the season, capped by a 2-1 loss to West Ham United. The club announced the decision Monday, appointing former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager while they search for a permanent replacement.
Ten Hag, who joined the club in 2022 and led United to both Carabao Cup and FA Cup victories, had his contract extended just this past summer. However, this season’s underwhelming performance, with United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League and struggling in Europe, left club leadership unconvinced he could turn things around.
Despite the team’s FA Cup triumph last season, United’s issues persisted, including a lack of consistent play, minimal impact from high-profile signings, and injuries to key players. Club co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, who recently revamped United’s management structure, had given Ten Hag an extension following an end-of-season review but ultimately decided on a change as results deteriorated.
Van Nistelrooy, who brings managerial experience from PSV Eindhoven, will lead the squad in their upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City. United has begun assessing options for a permanent manager, with speculation around candidates like Gareth Southgate, though formal talks have yet to be confirmed.
