Manchester United Land Matthijs de Ligt in €50M Transfer from Bayern Munich

Manchester United have secured the signing of Dutch center-back Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich in a deal worth €50 million, including €5 million in potential add-ons. The 24-year-old defender, who previously thrived under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, is set to reunite with his former manager at Old Trafford. De Ligt has agreed to a five-year contract with United, with an option to extend for an additional year, pending a medical.

This acquisition bolsters United’s defense, which has been hit by injuries and the departure of Raphael Varane. De Ligt’s experience and leadership qualities are seen as pivotal for stabilizing the backline. The Dutch international, who made 73 appearances and scored five goals during his two seasons with Bayern, is expected to fit seamlessly into Ten Hag’s tactical setup.

In a related move, United are progressing in talks to sign Bayern Munich right-back Noussair Mazraoui, contingent on the departure of Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham United. Wan-Bissaka is close to finalizing his exit after four seasons at Old Trafford, paving the way for Mazraoui’s arrival.

De Ligt’s ability to play out from the back and his proficiency in passing could signal a tactical shift for United, with Ten Hag potentially moving towards a more possession-based style of play. The club is eager to finalize De Ligt’s registration ahead of their Premier League opener against Fulham, ensuring the new signing is available to reinforce their defensive ranks.
