Manchester United is in discussions to appoint Ruben Amorim, Sporting Lisbon’s manager, as the replacement for recently dismissed Erik ten Hag. Amorim, 39, has risen to prominence by leading Sporting to two Portuguese league titles, including their first in 19 years. The Portuguese coach is now considered a top candidate for the role at Old Trafford.
United is prepared to pay the release clause for Amorim’s contract, which runs until June 2026. While Amorim has been tight-lipped about his future, he expressed pride in his current role at Sporting when asked during a press conference on Monday.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag’s assistant, has been named interim manager, though United has not confirmed if he will lead the team for their upcoming Carabao Cup match against Leicester. Despite concerns over compensation costs, sources suggest that paying for Amorim’s release would not be a significant obstacle for the club.
Amorim, known for his impressive tactical approach, led Sporting to a 100% win record in the current Portuguese league season. However, he lacks experience outside of Portugal, which could present challenges in the high-pressure environment of Manchester United.
