Manchester United are in advanced discussions with Marseille over a potential loan deal, with an option for a permanent transfer, for Mason Greenwood. The 22-year-old forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe and scored 10 goals in 36 appearances, was initially set to return to United for preseason training.
Greenwood visited United’s Carrington training ground for a meeting with the new football leadership team to discuss finding a new club. He did not participate in training.
Greenwood has not played for United since his suspension in January 2022 following allegations of rape and assault. Although charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023 due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence, United decided to seek a new club for him.
Getafe had shown interest in signing Greenwood permanently, but United are seeking at least £20 million ($25.7m) for him. Other clubs, including Juventus, Atlético Madrid, and Lazio, also expressed interest. However, Marseille has emerged as the frontrunner, with talks between the clubs progressing.
Greenwood’s departure would provide United with additional funds for their summer transfer budget, as proceeds from his sale would be considered pure profit due to his academy background.
In addition to the Greenwood transfer talks, United are undergoing changes in their coaching staff, with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hack joining Erik ten Hag’s team, pending visa approvals.
