Chelsea triumphed over Manchester United with a resounding 6-0 victory at Old Trafford, securing their fifth consecutive Women’s Super League (WSL) title and giving manager Emma Hayes a memorable farewell in her final game.
Entering the match tied on points with Manchester City but leading on goal difference, Chelsea knew a decisive win would clinch the title. The Blues delivered spectacularly, finishing the season with 55 points and a superior goal difference of +7 over City.
Mayra Ramirez starred, scoring twice and providing two assists. She opened the scoring just two minutes into the game and added a second goal in first-half injury time. Ramirez also set up Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Sjoeke Nusken for their goals, with Melanie Leupolz and Fran Kirby rounding out the scoreline.
Fran Kirby, playing her last match for Chelsea, scored the sixth goal, marking her 116th for the club to an emotional ovation from fans.
Emma Hayes, reflecting on the win and her tenure, said, “I can’t say it was my most enjoyable [title], but it’s been the toughest without doubt and for that reason, probably the sweetest. The hardest thing to do is five in a row because people do take their eye off the ball, people do drop their standards or new players need to learn the Chelsea standard, and they haven’t all had it.”
Sky Sports’ Karen Carney and Izzy Christensen praised Chelsea’s dominant performance, emphasizing their mental toughness and superior class compared to Manchester United.
Chelsea’s victory also made them the league’s top scorers with 71 goals and secured the second-best defensive record behind Manchester City.
Fans can watch the match highlights and relive Chelsea’s championship-winning performance on Sky Sports Box Office at 10am and 10pm on Sunday.
