Germany secured their place in the Nations League quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands, thanks to Jamie Leweling’s decisive debut goal. The Stuttgart midfielder, making his first international appearance, found the net in the 64th minute, smashing the ball into the top corner after a poorly cleared corner by the Dutch defense.
Leweling had an early goal ruled out for offside in the second minute, but he remained Germany’s standout player. The Dutch, missing suspended captain Virgil van Dijk, struggled to create clear chances throughout the match. Their best opportunities came late in the game when Cody Gakpo’s cross and Xavi Simons’ strike both hit the crossbar.
Germany, who dominated possession and chances, nearly extended their lead with efforts from Tim Kleindienst and Serge Gnabry. However, it was Germany’s veteran goalkeeper Oliver Baumann who preserved the win with a crucial save in the 90th minute, deflecting a powerful shot from Donyell Malen.
Germany now tops Group A3 with 10 points and is guaranteed a place in the quarterfinals. The Netherlands, level on 5 points with Hungary, face a tougher path forward as only the top two teams will advance.
German coach Julian Nagelsmann praised Leweling’s impact on debut and the team’s overall performance. “We deserved the win, but we’ll need to maintain this form in the next games,” he said.
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman admitted his side struggled, saying, “We didn’t execute our plan. Germany was stronger, faster, and more organized.”
With one match remaining, the Netherlands will need a strong finish to keep their hopes alive, while Germany will aim to continue their winning momentum.
