In a historic performance at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi, featherweight champion Ilia Topuria became the first fighter to knock out Max Holloway, securing his title defense with a powerful third-round finish. Topuria (16-0) floored Holloway (26-8) with a left hook, following up with hammerfists to clinch the victory at 1:34 in the round, cementing his reputation as one of the most fearsome competitors in the division.

The victory solidified Topuria’s position as the division’s undisputed champion, following his initial title win in February with a knockout over Alexander Volkanovski. Despite Holloway’s endurance and technical prowess, Topuria’s power punches found their mark. “Beating a legend like Max Holloway is surreal,” Topuria said. “I’ve followed his career, and he’s always been a role model. Now, I’m proud to set that example for the next generation.”

The fight initially appeared competitive, with Holloway landing multiple strikes in his trademark fast-paced style. But Topuria’s timing and power turned the tide, as he staggered Holloway with a brutal right hand before delivering the finishing blow. Holloway, ever respectful, acknowledged Topuria’s skill: “He landed the shot that mattered. Hats off to him – he was the better man tonight.”

The win sets up major future matchups for Topuria. UFC president Dana White indicated that a rematch with Volkanovski, who was in attendance, could be next, possibly in Sydney in early 2025. Additionally, contender Diego Lopes remains in the title conversation following his recent victory.

At only 27, Topuria is the youngest UFC champion, and his journey is just beginning. With potential fights against elite competition on the horizon, Topuria has firmly established himself as a dominant force in the featherweight division.
